Today, I wrote another paragraph of my epitaph.
You see, tonight I am more of what I will become than I was last night–this week than last; this year than any previous.
I just cannot help “becoming”. It is ultimate and unavoidable. Every day I live I am becoming now what I will be then.
Becoming is really the inescapable daily process of change that occurs in and to us based on the shaping forces we allow to influence us. We are constantly being shaped into what we will become by what we allow to define us.
Every day, I have to ask myself what is really defining who I am and how I live?
Here are the realities I confront as I probe my heart:
I am shaped by the people I allow to influence me.
- Whose affection and affirmation do I crave?
- Whose opinions do I care most about?
- Who do I want to be like?
I am shaped by the passion I allow to ignite me.
- What causes my heart to burn?
- What am I willing to sacrifice for?
- What do I say ‘yes’ to no matter what?
I am shaped by the purpose I allow to inspire me.
- What target is my life toward?
- What trajectory is my auto-pilot set on?
- What is at the top of my resume’ and first on my profile?
While I have no choice about the process of becoming, I have a lot of options about the person I am becoming.
Each choice I make to be influenced by the things that matter, I am also choosing to become a person who matters. As I opt for more than making a living, I become a person who makes a life. Whenever I make small daily decisions to be missional and transformational I am also deciding to be radically different from the world in which I am becoming.
Jesus desires to be the designer of my life. He wants to be the one who is my priority shaping influence. He wants to ignite my heart and inspire my vision so He can direct my life. He wants to be the one who forms what I am becoming.
Remember: destination is where you are going, destiny is what you become on the way.
